Learning Objective

Analysing alcohols

Learning Outcome

Student is able to :
a) State the general formula of alcohols.
b) Identify the functional group of alcohols.
c) List the names and the molecular formulae of the first four alcohols.

d) Draw structural formulae for isomers of propanol and butanol.
e) Name isomers of propanol and butanol using IUPAC nomenclature.

Activities

a) Construct a table of names and molecular formulae for the first four alcohols.

b) Carry out an activity to draw various possible structural formulae of the first four alcohols and name them.

Noble Values

Appreciating the balance of nature.

Teaching Aids

a) Text book
b) Reference book

Reflection

5 of the students do not really understand today's lesson. This is because they do not master the topic isomerism. Teacher gives personal explanation on reinforcement of the previous lesson. Teacher highlight the important aspect and guide step by step to make sure all of them are able to do the isomerism. Students have no problems with the formula and giving names for all the alcohols shown by teacher. During naming of isomers of alcohol, teacher gives several formulas and asks them to draw. All of them finally are able to draw and gives name for that alcohol. Today's objectives are achieved.

Reflection

Teacher spends one period to discuss the exercises from the previous lesson. Almost all of them unable to give answer for 5 of the question from work this out 3.8 calculation exercises. Teacher discovers that the main problem is that students do not understand the question. Therefore teacher guides them and leave them to do the calculation by themselves. All of students are able to do the cross multiplication in order to derive the chemical formula each substance in the exercise. They also able to give the correct names of each chemical formula given. Today's objectives are achieved. Students do exercises in the textbook to evaluate their understanding.
